meeting grounds The meeting grounds are the casually designated area for interaction with other horses. They are a relatively small place: there is a forest, a stream and small lake, a meadow and some rocky hills all within a few square miles that offer a variety of environments to accommodate the comfort zones of many. Young mares usually come here when searching for a new herd, as do stallions who are looking for mares. Foals are also brought here to play with other foals. |

miracle meadow This tiny meadow is located at the bottom of a cliff where it curves into itself, creating a kind of cove in the rock. The field is surrounded on three sides by high cliffs. Pregnant mares are often attracted to this place when it is time for them to give birth due the ease with which it can be defended against predators. |

golden forest This forest of ancient maple trees is named for the color that the leaves turn for a few weeks every year in autumn. The place is especially beautiful at that time of year on a sunny day, when the sunlight shines through the leaves and casts a soft yellow light beneath the canopy. This forest is practically devoid of food except for a few grassy clearings, but countless tiny streams provide water. There are a few large hazel trees that provide food for small rodents, which attract the only predator to frequent the forest: red foxes. |

windy gorge Located about 10 miles north of the mountain, a broad, slow-moving river travels its arrow-straight course through the Windy Gorge, which extends for countless miles from the sea, east. On both sides of the river rise steep, fir-covered slopes that are met by ragged basalt cliffs. Every few miles a waterfall roars over the cliffs from dozens and hundreds of feet up and transforms into a stream that dances eagerly downhill to join the larger river. The spectacular view from atop the cliffs is perhaps worth braving the perpetual gusts. There is little food to eat here, plenty of water, and many rodents such as chipmunks and rabbits, which attract smaller predators such as bobcats and foxes. The large deer population in this area, however, attracts a few mountain lions, which are far more dangerous. |

oldwood The Oldwood Forest–commonly just "Oldwood"–is a vast old growth forest that stretches from the far north to the burned forest and from the high desert to the basin. The forest is so old that huge logs of petrified wood can sometimes be found in it. The tallest trees here are straight Douglas firs, reaching 100 feet into the air and higher. Huckleberry trees grow at certain altitudes, yielding their fruit in the summer when and the soft ground is covered in oxalis. Many animals make this forest their home: deer, raccoons, ravens, owls, and dangerous predators such as bears, wolverines and wolves. Oldwood is a dangerous, although wondrous, place that one is more likely to get lost in than to visit for pleasure. |

sagebrush hills Further east than all the rest of the notable places, the Sagebrush Hills are a vast, rocky stretch of high desert covered in blue-gray sagebrush and other sages and dry grasses. The sagebrush is toxic, so when wandering here starvation is a threat. One must be careful when browsing the edible grasses not to pick some of the poisonous plants. Throughout the hills there are numerous watering holes where other animals, such as pronghorn antelope, gather. Predators do not usually frequent the area but it is not impossible to be attacked bya few wolves. |

the basin Halfway between the mountain and the sea lies a vast, flat grassland known only as the Basin. It is close to 20 miles wide, runs 100 miles north and south, and is surrounded on all sides by hills, making it essentially an enormous valley. The basin is devoid of trees except for right in the middle, where a single gigantic hill rises. At the base of this hill, encircling it, is a grove of quaking aspen trees called the Shivering Forest. A stream runs near the base of the hill and is one of the only such water sources in the basin. |

the bachelors This is a herd reserved for stallions who are old enough that they have been kicked out of their fathers' herds but have not yet become lead stallion of a herd or obtained a mare. Stallions who are in this herd are constantly practicing their fighting skills so that they may be ready when the day comes to defend their mares or defeat a lead stallion and possess his mares. |

the rebels The goal of members of this herd is to steal horses from other herds, claim other horses' territories, and, most of all, fight the bachelor band. There is only one way for stolen horses to escape the rebels: they must be rescued. |
