Halfway between the mountain and the sea lies a vast, flat grassland known only as the Basin. It is close to 20 miles wide, runs 100 miles north and south, and is surrounded on all sides by hills, making it essentially an enormous valley. The basin is devoid of trees except for right in the middle, where a single gigantic hill rises. At the base of this hill, encircling it, is a grove of quaking aspen trees called the Shivering Forest. A stream runs near the base of the hill and is one of the only such water sources in the basin.
